For many children learning to use the toilet/potty can be a confusing and overwhelming time. Providing positive praise for many, is encouraging and spurs them on to keep trying to use the toilet/potty.
For many autistic children, information provided in a visual format supports their learning and information processing style.
For children with additional needs, specifically autistic children, visuals such a Visual Reward / Recognition Chart helps them to understand the expectation and reasoning behind what they are being asked to do. The collecting of the “Wee / Poop” tokens helps to support them to understand what is happening when they pass urine or a stool while on the toilet.
I have intentionally created the Recognition/Reward Charts herein to be clear and precise.
I have not included a “Reward Section” as I have found in my personal (as a parent) and professional (as an Autism Consultant) that it can confuse autistic child who are trying so hard already to understand the expectations and reasoning behind toilet training. The goal with toilet/potty training should be to achieve “Independence” and not “compliance” ie- if you do X I will give you Y (a reward).
The reward/recognition in this instance is that the child will collect tokens for attempts and deposits of passing urine and stools.
